Interest Groups

Interest groups are gatherings of club members who meet regularly to pursue a common interest or try something new. The only requirement for joining an Interest Group is membership in CFUW Stratford.

The groups below are continuing from last year and welcome new members.

Advocacy Committee    Coordinator: Louise McColl     1st Mondays at 1pm

This is actually a committee of the executive, which works on strategies to impact current concerns: Intercity public transportation; Reducing/eliminating use of bottled water in Stratford; Improving lives of First Nations peoples; Building the international focus of CFUW.

Book Club 3    Coordinator: Louise McColl      3rd Thursdays at 7:30pm

Book titles are selected the previous June (the list will be available at sign-up). The library provides enough copies of each month’s selection for all members. Members take turns hosting and leading discussions.

Book Club 5      Coordinator: Sue Butler     1st Wednesdays at 1:30pm

Discussion of a monthly book selection.

Bridge at the Queen’s     Coordinator: Nancy Dunn      1st Thursdays at 12pm

The list of regular members is full, but the group will welcome spares. Costs include $14.00 for lunch (including tax & gratuity) and a loony to play.

French Conversation     Coordinator: Margaret Wilmer     2nd Thursdays at 12pm

Parlez-vous francais? The group will meet at a restaurant or in each others’ homes.

Lunch Bunch        Coordinator: Di Sims       3rd Fridays at 12pm

The group meets at a different restaurant each month. Di welcomes suggestions.

Knit Group     Coordinator: Pat Bayliss      Last Thursdays at 1:30pm

Purl Group      Coordinator: Norah Jean Perkin     3rd Wednesdays at 1:30pm

These groups are similar, just meeting at different times. Members enjoy bringing knitting, crocheting or other needlework creations to work on while chatting and sharing tips. Novices, don’t be shy about signing up – help is at hand!

Mahjong      Coordinator: Pat Nelles      2nd Wednesdays at 1:30pm

Mahjong is a tile-based strategy game that originated in China. Sign up and give it a try!

Movie Nights       Coordinator: Sylvia Wright      3rd Mondays at 7pm

In partnership with TIFF, Gallery Stratford arranges screenings at Stratford Cinemas of fine Canadian and International films in limited distribution. Sylvia contacts interested CFUW movie buffs with a description of each month’s selection. Cost: $9.00 or $8.00 for Gallery members.

Quilting       Coordinator: Lois Battle     Weekly Mondays at 2pm

Members work on personal projects, and sometimes a group project, e.g. last year’s Hobo Quilt. Inexperienced, would-be quilters are welcome!

Museum/Gallery Visits     Coordinator: Eleanor Kane

Outings as Arranged After an organisation meeting in the fall, members share responsibilities for arranging outings.

Potential New Groups:

• Sister Groups for the groups that are full, at present: Book Club 4, Mystery Readers, and Gourmet

• MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses): At the OC AGM, we heard that some club groups enjoyed taking an online course together. If this idea appeals, check out http://www.mooc-list.com for info.

• Jazz Lovers: Carpool to The Jazz Room in Waterloo once a month on a Friday or Saturday evening.

New ideas welcome! Email Jane Cook, Interest Group Coordinator, at jane.blackie.cook@gmail.com
